Tanya Sue Chutkan (born July 5, 1962) is a Jamaican-born American lawyer and jurist known for her tough sentencing of January 6 defendants and her role in the federal election interference case against Donald Trump. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, she immigrated to the United States as a child and grew up in New York City. She earned her undergraduate degree from George Washington University and her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. President Obama appointed her to the federal bench in 2014.
