Overview
Bennie Thompson is the U.S. Representative for Mississippi's 2nd congressional district, serving since 1993. He is the longest-serving African American elected official in Mississippi. Thompson chaired the House Homeland Security Committee from 2007-2011 and again from 2019-2023. He was selected by Speaker Nancy Pelosi to chair the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack in July 2021, leading the committee's 18-month investigation.
