Kevin McCarthy served in Congress from 2007 to 2023, representing California. He rose through Republican leadership, serving as Majority Whip and Majority Leader before becoming Speaker in January 2023 after 15 rounds of voting. McCarthy's relationship with Trump evolved significantly. Initially critical after January 6, McCarthy traveled to Mar-a-Lago within weeks to reconcile with Trump. McCarthy was removed as Speaker in October 2023 by Matt Gaetz, making him the first Speaker removed in U.S. history.
