John M. Dowd

John Dowd is a former Justice Department attorney and white-collar criminal defense specialist who served as Trump's lead outside counsel for the Mueller investigation from July 2017 to March 2018. Dowd negotiated Trump's written responses to Mueller's questions and argued against an in-person interview. Initially advocating cooperation, he later adopted a more combative approach. Dowd resigned on March 22, 2018, reportedly after disagreeing with Trump's desire to attack Mueller publicly, stating: "I will be shocked if anything regarding the president is made public."
